Barclays redundancies will affect about 5,000 people by the end of 2026, and the bank links part of the cut to AI. If you work for Barclays, the reason given matters less than two things: the terms you are offered and the date your employment ends.

That date matters more than usual this year. Some employment rights change on 1 January 2027, and Barclays expects the remaining cuts to be completed before then.

What has Barclays announced about its redundancies?

Barclays announced on 22 October 2026 that it is cutting about 5,000 jobs, around 5% of its 93,000 global staff. Here is what has been reported:

  • Scale: About 5,000 full time employees worldwide, around 5% of the global workforce
  • Progress: 1,000 roles already cut this year, with 4,000 more expected by the end of 2026
  • Where: About 60% in support functions, including fewer developers
  • UK retail bank: The BBC says the cost reductions are focused here
  • India: A significant share of the cuts is expected in India, where some UK back office work is done
  • Savings: More than £1.1bn expected in 2027
  • UK share: Exact UK number not reported

Chief financial officer Anna Cross said around 60% of the actions relate to support functions, “including fewer developers, as AI makes our people more productive”.

Chief executive C. S. Venkatakrishnan was asked how many cuts are directly linked to AI. He did not give a figure. He said investment in technology and simpler processes is driving “the bulk of the efficiency gains” so far. He called AI “the icing on the cake not the cake”.

The cuts came with higher profit. Barclays reported pre tax profit of £2.3 billion for the July to September quarter, up 12% from £2.1 billion a year earlier.

What do we not know about the UK terms yet?

Reports do not give the exact UK number of cuts. They also do not say whether exits are part of a voluntary or a compulsory redundancy process. Package terms have not been reported either.

Does your leaving date change your rights?

Yes, your leaving date can change your rights, because two employment law changes apply from 1 January 2027. With about 4,000 Barclays roles due to go by the end of this year, the date on your paperwork is worth a careful look.

The rule works by your effective date of termination. That is usually your last day of employment, including any notice period.

Right Leaving before 1 January 2027 Leaving on or after 1 January 2027
Service needed to claim ordinary unfair dismissal Two years Six months
Cap on unfair dismissal compensation The lower of £123,543 or 52 weeks’ pay No cap
Service needed for statutory redundancy pay Two years Two years

Barclays expects the cuts to be complete by the end of 2026, but it has not said when each person’s employment will end. A long notice period or garden leave can push your date into 2027.

You usually do not choose your leaving date. Your contract and the employer’s process set it. Even so, check it, and ask about it if your notice runs close to the new year.

A settlement agreement means you give up claims in return for payment. The date can change the value of the claims you are giving up. Our reasonable settlement agreement guide explains how offers are judged.

Can AI be a genuine reason for redundancy?

Yes, AI can be a genuine reason for redundancy. Under section 139 of the Employment Rights Act 1996, a redundancy arises when the employer’s need for employees to do work of a particular kind has ceased or diminished.

Whatever label Barclays uses, that is the test. If AI tools mean the bank needs fewer developers and support staff, the test can be met. The reason still has to be real, and the redundancy consultation process still has to be fair.

What should you ask if you are at risk?

  • Has the work really reduced? A role that is refilled under a new title may not be a genuine redundancy.
  • How was the pool drawn? The pool is the group of staff considered for selection.
  • How were you scored? Ask for the criteria and your score in writing.
  • Were other roles considered? Ask what vacancies exist and whether you can apply.

Does Barclays have to consult UK staff collectively?

Barclays redundancies trigger collective consultation if 20 or more redundancies are proposed at one UK establishment within 90 days. Consultation must start at least 30 days before the first dismissal where 20 to 99 roles are affected. For 100 or more, the minimum is 45 days.

The 5,000 figure is global and spread across the year. Whether the duty applies depends on the numbers at each UK site and when the proposals were made.

The BBC reports that a significant share of the cuts falls in India, and as such, these employees are bound by different employment rules.

What is different about leaving a bank?

Leaving a bank like Barclays involves terms that most employers do not have. These are the ones to check:

Issue What to check
Deferred bonus and share awards Whether redundancy counts as good leaver under the plan rules, and what happens to unvested awards
Malus and clawback If you are covered, whether pay can be reduced or recovered after you leave
Regulatory reference If your next role is regulated, the new employer can request a reference under FCA rules. It generally covers the previous six years
Notice and garden leave Whether you are paid in lieu or kept on garden leave. Our payment in lieu of notice guide explains the difference
Restrictions after you leave Limits on joining a competitor or approaching clients. Our guide on getting a job after a settlement agreement covers this
Pension and benefits When cover ends and what you keep

What could Barclays staff be paid if they leave?

Barclays staff could receive statutory redundancy pay, notice pay, holiday pay and any bonus earned, plus an enhanced payment if the bank offers one. Your package depends on your contract and the terms Barclays sets.

Statutory redundancy pay needs two years’ service. For exits on or after 6 April 2026, weekly pay is capped at £751 and the maximum payment is £22,530. Our statutory redundancy guide explains the formula. Any ex gratia payment on top is negotiable.

How much of a Barclays exit payment is taxed?

The first £30,000 of a genuine termination payment is free of tax. Payments that replace normal pay are taxed as earnings.

Payment Taxed?
Notice pay or pay in lieu Yes, in full
Holiday pay and earned bonus Yes, in full
Statutory redundancy pay No, within the £30,000 exemption
Enhanced payment Generally no, up to £30,000 combined with statutory redundancy pay

What should you check before signing a Barclays exit agreement?

Check your Barclays exit agreement carefully before you sign. It will likely ask you to give up your right to bring claims against your employer. To be valid, you must first take independent settlement agreement advice from a qualified solicitor.

Before you sign, check:

  • How your exit is classed, and what that means for your statutory redundancy pay
  • A written breakdown of every payment and when it will be made
  • The status of your deferred bonus and share awards
  • The agreed wording of your reference
  • Your effective date of termination
  • The deadline. The Acas Code of Practice recommends at least 10 calendar days to review terms and take advice.
